That sense of humor is not what persuaded the Yankees to sign him. Park, who announced his signing at a news conference in Seoul on Monday, came to embrace being a reliever with Philadelphia and pitched more aggressively in that role. He has also pitched in 12 postseason games — eight and one-third innings in all — over the last two years, making him the sort of playoff-tested reliever the Yankees like. Park, 36, said he will receive a base salary of $1.2 million. If he reaches his performance bonuses, Park said he can make up to $1.5 million — or about half as much as the Phillies are believed to have offered to re-sign him after last season.
When his price dropped, the Yankees pounced. The deal is pending a physical. Park went 2-2 with a 2.52 earned run average in 38 relief appearances with the Phillies last season.
“I was deliberating on the Chicago Cubs and the Yankees, but their history and championship contention resulted in me picking the Yankees,” Park said at the news conference.
A healthy Park is ticketed for the bullpen, which should spell trouble for Chad Gaudin, Alfredo Aceves and Sergio Mitre. Park can pitch multiple innings, making another long man expendable.
Gaudin, Aceves and Mitre will compete with Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain for the fifth starter’s job, but a foreseeable scenario would be the Yankees’ dealing one of them at the end of spring training to a pitching-starved team. Of the three, Aceves has more recent experience as a reliever.
